Praying For Wisdom

The thing about praying for wisdom is that if you are doing that, it shows that you’re already on the right track. It’s like knowing that you don’t know enough about something to make an informed decision. The vast majority of people have opinions on things they know little about. So, the fact that Solomon asks God for wisdom at the beginning of his reign is indicative of the fact that he already was humble enough to know he needed help, was willing to learn, and knew who to go to for help.

The Older I Get The More I Know I Don’t Know

Pretty much the only consistent thing about older is how frequently I am confronted with things I no nothing about. I do love to research and learn so there are countless rabbit holes I’ve gone down starting with something simple. Language fascinates me, history is intriguing, cultures are interesting, and there are so many aspects of life that inspire me to look deeper. Wisdom, however, is far more than what we learn in books.

Wisdom is more than knowledge

Defining Wisdom

Wisdom is defined as: a) the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment; the quality of being wise. b)the soundness of an action or decision with regard to the application of experience, knowledge, and good judgment. c) the body of knowledge and principles that develops within a specified society or period.
There are 36 related words after the definition. The very fact that there are so many related words tells us that wisdom is socially and historically important.

What’s The Point?

That’s exactly what Solomon asked in Ecclesiastes. What was the point of all this wisdom, all this life, all these experiences. Solomon starts by saying it’s all meaningless. He later comes to the conclusion that there was nothing new under the sun, and ends with the idea that the point is simply to follow God. Because, he says, no matter what we do, in darkness or light, God knows about it. I’ve often though Ecclesiastes is a kind of depressing book, but actually it’s comforting in a weird way. If there is nothing new under the sun, then God has already seen it, dealt with it, and overcome it. And, if I go to the right source, He can grant me the wisdom to overcome it too.

1 Kings 3

1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
