Though Mountains Shake

“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.
Isaiah 54:10

Shaken

About a year ago we had an earthquake in my area. We aren’t used to these here and, even though it was not severe in comparison to the earthquakes you hear about on the news, it did cause some damage and it unnerved a lot of people. Among them was my husband who happened to be home at the time. The whole house started shaking and it freaked him out. We live relatively close to the train tracks so we are used to the rumbling of the trains and even low-flying planes at times and that is what he thought it was initially. What started as mild curiosity quickly turned to fear as he tried to figure out what to do next.

The only significant earthquake in our parts happened when I was a child. My mother ran to my bedside to hold onto me while the walls shook and prayed. I’m glad I don’t live in a regular earthquake zone – it must be terrifying to feel the world shaking beneath your feet. The sheer magnitude of watching buildings, hills, and mountains crumble around you seems terrifying.

Unshakable Love

Yet, God tells us that despite this His love is unshakable. Not just unshakable, but impossible to remove. Imagine the magnitude of love so great that not even an earthquake can rattle it! Now imagine that this love is God’s love for YOU.

If you’ve ever been rattled to your core by life, you know what it feels like to have the “earth” move beneath your feet. Everyone has their own earth-shattering events in their lives. It could be the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, a home, health, or a relationship. Maybe you found out something you wish you hadn’t. It knocked you off your moorings, maybe even knocked you out for a while. It might not feel like it but, even in those times, God’s love for us is unshakable.

If you’ve ever been blessed to hug a hurting child, friend, or family member when the strength of their sobs shakes you – you know what it is to be somebody’s anchor in the storm.

God Is That For Us

God is that for us – only better. None of our sobs can ever shake him. There are no sins He can not forgive. His arms are even open. And, none of our earthquakes will ever rattle our Lord and Savior.  God promises that “[His] unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor [His] covenant of peace be removed.” How amazing is that?

So show me your valleys, your shaking mountains, and I will show you my God who is bigger than them all.
