Where Are You Looking?
Can you imagine running a race without knowing where the finish line is? You’d be running just to run. Motion isn’t necessarily movement. You could be running in circles. In Philippians 3:13-14 Paul says, “13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” To reach the prize and achieve the goal, you’ve got to know where to look. Where are you looking?
Look At Me. Jump!
Standing at the edge of the pool, the concrete grains scratching the soles of my feet, the sun beating down on my head, and the wide expanse of too-deep water staring back at me was intimidating. But in the middle of it all stood my mother. “Look at me. Jump!” she would say. She knew I was afraid, but she would catch me and kept reminding me to look in the right place. Don’t look at the deep waters. Don’t worry if you aren’t a great swimmer yet. Trust me and I will catch you. So I jumped – over and over again. If I had focused on the wrong thing, I may never have made the leap. God also calls us to look at Him and jump.
The Devil’s In The Distractions
You probably thought I was going to say details – but no. The devil is in the distractions. The distractions are what keep us from looking to God when we are supposed to be running the race He set out for us. The distractions are what keep us from the goal. It’s probably the best tool he has – What about this bill? You have time for this. What’s happening on social media? You deserve a break. Pick up that call, you can finish praying later. Whatever it is, if it’s distracting you from where you’re supposed to be looking – it’s keeping you from running in the right direction.
Shaking My Head
Sometimes I find myself literally shaking my head to refocus my attention in the right place. I find myself saying, What are doing? Where are you looking? That’s not actually a bad thing – it’s a reminder that it’s important to reassess & refocus to run. And sometimes, when we can’t run – we can still walk toward the goal. If we can only stand, or sit – then facing the Son can warm our hearts, refresh our spirits, and provide the rest we need to move again. So whether you are sitting or stepping – face the right direction and jump. God will catch you.
