Work
I’m tired today. It’s been a long four days. In speaking with someone earlier, I expressed the fact that there never seems to be enough hours in the day. If I ever wanted to engage in some self-care, it would be difficult to schedule. So many of us run from job-to-job or job-to-responsibility without ever thinking of what we are missing. So why do we do it? What’s so great about being too busy to take a break?
Work?
Nothing, really. Who on earth gets great joy out of working until you’re so exhausted you fall asleep while doing the thing that is supposed to reinvigorate you? It’s craziness. We no longer work to live – we work to pay bills. Is that what we want from life? Or, do we want to have a full life – filled to overflowing? As I ask these questions, I have this nagging thought that I am speaking theoretically. I mean, Christians are supposed to be hardworking. I think we are supposed to love work with all our hearts and souls. It’s almost like the level of exhaustion we feel after working our fingers to the bone is directly proportional to our level of “Christian” -ness. Or at least it feels like that is the way we’re supposed to feel.
I don’t remember reading anything like that in the bible. But, of course, there are bible verses that reference the benefits of hard work. There are also verses saying that toiling for earthly “bread” is pointless – we should be toiling for the Lord. In fact, we are encouraged to work heartily for the Lord. The funny thing is that we can never outgive God. We can give of our time and our energy, but God’s bounty is endless. His desire is to fill you so full of blessings, hope, peace, and joy that you never doubt Him. He wants not only to fill you up but give you so much you overflow.
Who Can Outgive God?
The other funny thing is that I’ve always been an extremely hard worker, yet I’ve never worked for a boss who wanted to pour back into me more than I could hold. So it made me think about who I’m spending my waking hours working for. Shouldn’t my focus then be on working as hard as I can for God? If no matter how much I put in – He will put back more – it seems a no-brainer. So what can I do for the Lord today?
