Everyone wants a full color spread – filtered, sparkling, brilliant.

But…

Those only exist on Instagram, Facebook, Entertainment Television & social media in general.

For many of us, our regular lives are simply greyscale. There may be a hint of color somewhere in the picture, but we only get those Insta pic days on vacation or special occasions.

But, hey…

What’s wrong with greyscale? I mean, arty people are always taking black and white photographs, right? Stripped of color, the subjects emanate their raw beauty in a way that is compelling. Some of my favorite family pictures are in black and white.

So what is so bad about living the day to day in grey?

Sometimes the way across isn’t clear. Sometimes the sky is cloudy. And, sometimes, it seems that the only way through is over the rocks and into the waves.

Wishing for color is a distraction from the business of getting things done. Maybe we should be looking more for the texture of the thing. Maybe color is just a construct. What adds depth to life might not be the vibrant hues of the highs but the nuanced variations of the mundane.

Perhaps, if we focus on the composition, construction, grain, or character of the thing – we may see a path through.

Perhaps the way out is in refocusing on what’s right in front of us. Perhaps enjoying the variety of shades of our life will enable us to pick out a way that may have blended into the background when we weren’t paying such close attention to detail.

After all, didn’t Jesus himself give up all the gold, glitter and glam of heaven and come down to earth to share in our mundane existence? His experiences with the day to day grey is what makes Him such an amazing savior – He knows or needs, wants, desires, struggles, and simple joys. He understands our heartache and pain. He is intimately aware of the texture of our lives.

Hebrews 4:15 & 16  Jesus understands every weakness of ours, because he was tempted in every way that we are. But he did not sin! So whenever we are in need, we should come bravely before the throne of our merciful God. There we will be treated with undeserved kindness, and we will find help.
