Some books make you cry; others make you angry. This book does both. My teenage daughter had been asking me to read this for some time now, and I’m glad I finally did. If you are looking for a real page-turner, this is it. There is something for the young adult reader and the more seasoned adult.

Starr, the story’s heroine is a conflicted teen struggling to fit in somewhere between the two worlds she straddles. Navigating the teenage years is difficult enough without adding a second world in which one must not only function but thrive. Starr attempts to do both.

The conflict arises when her two worlds collide. She discovers who her friends are, the complicated nature of families, young love and the difference between genuine and fake friends.

My reading of this book coincided with the Botham Shem Jean case. Raw feelings about the injustices of both the fictional character, which was merely an aggregate of so many stories before and Mr. Jean swirled in my heart so tempestuously that it took nearly two weeks for me to write this review.

This is a great read. But, be prepared to experience a rollercoaster of emotions. You won’t be able to put it down.
